Pune, India - March 14, 2018 /MarketersMedia/ —

The travel and tourism industry consists of revenues generated by passenger airlines, passenger rail, foodservice, hotels and motels, travel intermediaries and casinos and gaming. The airlines industry comprises passenger air transportation, including both scheduled and chartered, but excludes air freight transport. Industry volumes are defined as the total number of revenue passengers carried/enplaned (departures) at all airports within the specified country or region, excluding transit passengers who arrive and depart on the same flight code. For the US and Canada, transborder passengers departing from either country are considered as part of the international segment. Industry value is defined as the total revenue obtained by airlines from transporting these passengers. This avoids the double-counting of passengers.

The passenger rail sector consists of all passenger transport by 'heavy rail' services, including international, inter-city, regional, and suburban trains ("Commuter trains" in US terminology are included). However, light rail, tram/streetcar, Metro/Subway, and similar trains are not included. Sector volumes are given in passenger-kilometers (PKM) and international traffic is counted in the country of origin. Foodservice is restricted to the sale of food and drink in specific foodservice channels defined below and excludes vending machines.

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan is reinforcing its five-year-old ban on network equipment produced by Chinese companies Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp. amid security concerns. Officials sought over the weekend to reassure lawmakers and the public that such measures have been effective and the threat to the communications sector is minimal. Huawei has established a presence in Taiwan, with its handsets among the top sellers. The company also sponsors a Christmas extravaganza in a Taipei suburb that features a giant Santa emblazoned with Huawei's logo. While several countries have similar bans in place, the risk for Taiwan is potentially greater since...

Indonesian forces locate bodies of 16 people killed in Papua

Dec 11, 2018

JAYAPURA, Indonesia — Security forces have located the bodies of 16 people and a soldier who were killed in one of the bloodiest separatist attacks in Indonesia's restive Papua province, a military official said Thursday. Army helicopters transported eight bodies and eight survivors, including a 4-year-old boy, from a remote mountainous village in Nduga district, Papua province military spokesman Col. Muhammad Aidi said. Gunfire between security forces and an armed group linked to the Free Papua Movement was hampering efforts to recover the eight other bodies, he said. The area is a stronghold of separatists who have battled Indonesian rule...

Chinese state media praise Bush as 'statesman of vision'

Dec 11, 2018

BEIJING — Chinese state media on Monday praised George H.W. Bush as a "statesman of vision," recalling the late president's role in helping end the Cold War and establishing the foundations of U.S.-China relations. The China Daily newspaper said Bush, who died Friday in Houston at age 94, realized in the 1980s that China was different from the Soviet Union and recognized the potential for cooperation. "It is fair to say, Bush was a statement of vision, not only for being a co-founder of the U.S. dominancy in the post-Cold War era, but also his insightful observations on China, which...
